History

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. Therefore, cancer research has become a crucial topic in medical science. Professor Ta-Cheng Tung(董大成), Department of Biochemistry, National Taiwan University, took an important step forward to propose the formation of the Chinese Oncology Society in 1980. The goal of the proposal is to bring together cancer experts from different institutions and improve the quality of cancer care in Taiwan. The First member meeting took place on July 26, 1980, Taipei, Taiwan. It was held at the 7th Lecture Hall of National Taiwan University Hospital in response to the proposal of Professor Ta-Cheng Tung(董大成) and over 300 members attended. The bylaws of the Chinese Oncology Society were passed at the member meeting and a nonprofit organization was hereby established under the name of the Chinese Oncology Society, abbreviated to "COS". In May 2017 "The Chinese Oncology Society" was officially renamed as "Taiwan Oncology Society", abbreviated to "TOS."

The Chinese Oncology Society aims to establish a network of cancer specialists, support the development of cancer research and facilitate cancer-related public engagement activities in Taiwan.
