Vice Superintendent of Taipei Cancer Center

❖ Biography:                                                                                        ⎢ View full profile ⎢
Dr. Tsu-Yi Chao began his career in cancer research at the Graduate Institute of Medical Science of the National Defense Medical Center, Taipei, Taiwan, and Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, New York, USA.  Subsequently he developed a productive program in the Tri-Service General Hospital (TSGH) using imprint cytology, immunocytochemistry and in situ hybridization for cancer diagnosis and immunotherapy for treatment.  He also has established other programs in TSGH including a comprehensive hemophilia center, a cancer clinical trial system, hospice care, and a clinical-oriented study program regarding the enzyme “tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5” (TRACP 5) and found that the serum TRACP5b activity could be a good marker for the diagnosis and following up of metastatic bone lesions in cancer patients. Besides, he has demonstrated that TRACP5a could be a biomarker for inflammatory disease.  Dr. Chao has participated in many local and international multi-center practice-changing trials in various cancer types, thus, significantly contributing to global cancer treatment.  Noteworthy, is the clinical prevention and treatment of hepatitis B recurrence after chemotherapy in patients with lymphoma or breast cancer.  In 2010, Dr. Chao joined the Taipei Medical University.  Through the years, alongside clinical trials, he has been actively involved in translational studies, including the identification of actionable and druggable targets implicated in tumor-driving cancer stemness and aberrant gene expression, as well as oncogenic epigenetic modifications and signal transduction.  Dr. Chao has published more than 218 research articles, reviews for several international peer-reviewed journals, and is participated in many scientific fora as invited speaker.

❖ Introduction:
Dr. Wen-Chun Hung has involved in cancer biology study for more than 20 years. Dr. Hung’s research focuses on the functional interaction between cancer and stromal cells in the metastasis of breast cancer, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer. He integrates molecular and biochemical methods to investigate the roles of different molecules including matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), MMP inhibitors, chemokine, chemokine receptors, and receptor tyrosine kinases in the migration, invasion and organ tropism of cancer cells. In addition to molecular and cellular experiments, he uses different animal models to explore in vivo function of these molecules.
He joined National Institute of Cancer Research, National Health Research Institutes in early 2011 and worked as an Investigator of the institute. He initiates two new projects after joining NHRI. The first one is the role of oncometabolites in cancer progression. By collaborating with the Metabolomics core of NHRI, he identifies the metabolites with potential oncogenic activity and tries to elucidate the underlying mechanism by which oncometabolites promote tumor metastasis. He collaborates with intramural and extramural PIs with strong background in metabolimics, stem cell biology and bioinformatics to carry out systemic study. The second is the crosstalk between cancer cells and lymphatic endothelial cells (LEC). He establishes several cancer cell lines with high lymphatic-tropic preference and is now studying the global gene expression profiles and specific target genes in these cell lines. He will try to dissect the role of the key players in lymphatic tropism in vitro and in vivo.
The ultimate goal of Dr. Hung’s study is to identify the critical molecules involved in regional and distant metastasis and translate his findings into cancer therapy or cancer prevention.

Chin-Tarng Lin, D.D.S., Ph.D., has devoted more than four decades to perform molecular and pathological cancer research and teaching. He was a pathology professor and is an Emeritus professor right now at the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University and Hospital. He has published more than 91 papers with 12 patents, and has been invited to give the scientific seminar over 75 times. He has presented 189 abstracts to attend the world wide biomedical science meetings. His research interests include the development of immunohistochemical localization of protein, mRNA and DNA molecules at the light and electron microscopic levels and peptide histochemistry to identify the peptide targeted binding protein. He has established 10 nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell lines (NPC-TW01 to 10) and four endometrioid cancer cell lines (OV-TW59-P0 to P4) in his laboratory. His major interests are to investigate the molecular pathogeneses of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) with or without Epstein-Barr virus infection and ovarian cancer. He has identified and verified some NPC and endometrioid cancer related genes. He and his colleague have also identified some specific peptides (12 a. a.) to localize their targeted proteins, to identify the cancer xenografts by MRI and to perform peptide-targeted chemotherapy for NPC, breast cancer, hepatoma, pancreatic cancer and other cancers.
